"Maestro" hasn't come here yet, but last night I went to the opening of the annual (since 2010) Solidarity Human Rights Film Festival at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, which my neighbor/friend and initiator of the festival decided should be held, despite, and perhaps because of the war. The festival opened with the showing of a powerful short film, "Faith", made by a young student filmmaker Yahav Viener, who was murdered at Kibbutz Kfar Aza on October 7th. The main feature was the very powerful Brazilian "Levante" (Power Alley) film, about a young volleyball player struggling for the right to an abortion against extremist conservative elements. Very worth seeing. And since it's Christmas Day, I recently saw for the first time the very quirky Orson Well's "Mr. Arkadian", Two of his bad guy henchmen don't seem to know English very well, and one of them says "Christmas Merry", quickly corrected by the other guy. So a "Christmas Merry" to everyone.

Yes, more subdued than previous years, but I told my neighbor Danny Vilenski he was right to hold it, and also complimented him on the choice of the two films that were shown on opening night.

The first year that we lived in Penn South we decided to stay home for the Christmas holiday We unpacked some of the boxes we’d just moved our worldly belongings in, showered attention on our cats, and ordered Chinese food. Someone told us that it was a Scandinavian custom to read books and eat chocolate on Christmas. I wasn’t sure if this was actually true or not, but it seemed like a wonderful idea We started a new custom for ourselves then. I never have regretted it.
