I'm not sure. I can appreciate that writing deserves payment. Yet at Palestine-Israel Journal we don't pay writers since we don't have the means to do so. That doesn't prevent writers from wanting to contribute articles to the publication. And I will add that lately I've been watching some fascinating Zoom discussions about poetry, presented by Prof. David Peimer, and he does them all for free. The latest were on T.S. Elliot, Dylan Thomas, Byron and Shelley, and William Blake. Next week, for summer fun, he's doing Sherlock Holmes, one of my heroes.
I feel that one should be paid what their art or service is worth. I enjoy seeing your poetry in my inbox every day. It is worth paying something to me.
You call this money? It’s so little. It’s the gesture that I value giving: my gesture says: it’s my pleasure to receive these poems, on so many levels thank you Esther Cohen!

I think writers should be paid, and I like your method of making it voluntary.
I like the idea of having it be both ways depending upon the budget of your faithful readers. There's something so pure about the option.
I agree with Susan and Jack. I also think it's great to talk openly about money, and appreciate you bringing it up .
I suppose I want it both ways: I think poets should be paid very well. I also advocate for and enjoy free, public things .
Another thing I would add is that substack is fairly new. The idea of paying for it is similarly new. It may take off, evolve, or fizzle.

Thanks x
Payment turns a personal friendship or relationship into a commercial one. That's why I'd rather not.
There's no free lunch
I’d prefer to pay yearly like when NPR does their seasonal fundraiser. I am not a fan of subscriptions…unless it’s giving me tons and tons of content.
interesting
thanks

As long as you can afford it , do it.
YES! I feel good paying to support poetry. Thanks for asking :)
you're sweet (!!!) xxxx
