My best friend when I was 5 years old was a white rooster named “Petey”. He waited for the school bus with me and when I came home he was always waiting by the bus stop for me.
I love that they are the closest relative to T-Rex!
I was once visiting a friend who raised chickens and he had a chicken catalog, half inch thick, with fotos of hundreds of breeds of chickens - 1600 breeds are recognized worldwide!
Amazing creatures. And they seem to produce eggs without even thinking about it. Some chickens get "Broody" as my daughter says. The are somehow compelled to sit on their eggs so they can breed them. That's amazing. Or maybe what's amazing is the many others who just deposit them where they can be collected.
My Nebraska grandparents raised chickens after their farm went bust during the Depression. When my aunt moved to E. 63rd St between Park and Madison, she used what she'd learned to dispatch the pigeons that were unfortunate enough to land in her little backyard.
Clucking amazing!
