NYC is the most "connecting" place in the world.....You can talk with anyone and 99% of the time they engage with you. Sometimes it turns into friendship. I love those few minute spontaneous chats in the elevator......at the bus stop......In Verdi Park.....at dining places.....I never understand how one can be lonely in the city.....A million places to meet up with others when the urge hits you. I am so thankful for this......

I like your technique... Or slowing down and paying attention...

We had a delightful power outage on Saturday night in Gainesville. We met neighbors we hadn't even seen before. I sent our leftovers from the previous night's dinner party over to people who were complaining that they had no food and couldn't use their internet to order in. Plus there was a power line down across the street so even Yelp and Uber, in an unholy alliance, couldn't deliver. What is leftover is neighboring.

Friends are everywhere! All we have to do is open our mouths and talk to strangers in safe surroundings. There are fascinating people - outside your head!

I was drawing on a bench in Cambridge when his remarkable mother (an Esther!) sat down next to me. She became a precious friend.

Their family walked out of Hungary in 1956 and settled in Oxford. Tolkien and CS Lewis were their colleagues and neighbors.
