Years ago I shaved my head
tried some hair colors
no green then just standard
hair dye deep eggplant
my color of choice.
Late, in Egypt at a parlor
in Cairo a woman with spectacular
kohl on her eyes put kohl on mine.
She suggested henna. For my first
henna treatment she wrapped color
on my head with covers from old
Time magazines. I wore
henna and kohl for years.
From henna I moved to various
reds, erring once with
strawberry blonde. In Peter’s

Chesray is dying my hair outside
dying it red, the red it is now.
My mother who made her hair
black most of her life left it grey
because her hairdresser friend Leda
told her grey was more dignified.
Grey was a hair mistake
for Sara Cohen. And for me.
