I was on the phone
with Didi who was
saying the new
Broadway Cabaret
was wonderful.
Suddenly she yelled
there’s an earthquake here
and she hung up.
We’re in the country for
my small book tour
(come to Citiot tonight
in Catskill at 6 PM)
when suddenly our big old house
actually started shaking
for a crazy minute or two.
(Where were you?)
I felt it on my 14th floor office (NYC Upper West Side). Having lived many decades in California, I was arguing with myself (This feels just like an earthquake, small or distant, but it is unusual to have an earthquake here. Maybe it's from construction on the subway next to our building. No, this rumbling is an earthquake!) I looked down from my window for King Kong lumbering along 100th Street, but he was nowhere in sight.
I was so busy editing a piece I love that I didn't feel the earthquake. Is this because I was in a special zone like trance or because Im on the 9th floor of my apartment building in NYC? who knows
