(Here it is for you if you missed it)
Because we are in New York today
I will go to Barney Greengrass
same as it always was no renovations
no assimilation or hipsterdom same crotchety
waiters who take their time. I’ll bring Blair
who is recovering from leg problems at the Jewish Home
a bagel and lox his requested food. Blair
is an American Catholic but the food still applies.
When I asked if he wanted rugelach
for dessert he said they’re so expensive.
Do you like them I asked? I love rugelach Blair said.
Of course I will buy rugelach.
Addendum
(Cindy Kaplan’s parents had the great
Kaplan’s deli. We went often. Sometimes they’d
put a gold brick on the table with the word
Mispachah (family).
The bagels here are not chewy, but we can get good lox and actual rugelach Baked in NYC. Heaven.
Lox was a rare treat in my house, growing up. We'd lay the precious delicacy on the bagel in slices so thin they were almost transparent. This piece made me miss my parents so much.
