Claudette Colvin
a celebration today
Claudette Colvin
Claudette Colvin was born
in Montgomery, Alabama.
At age 15 she refused
to give up her bus seat
to a white woman,
nine months before
Rosa Parks. A civil rights
hero, many people still
don’t know her story.
She lived in the Bronx,
worked as a home health aide
for the hospital workers union,
and died a year ago. We
all celebrated her today.

How wonderful to celebrate the life of Claudette Colvin! She was only fifteen years old when she took a brave stand on a city bus in Montgomery. Claudette is one of fifty amazing people profiled in Rob Shetterly's book, Portraits of Racial Justice: Americans Who Tell the Truth, and I love his painting of her. https://americanswhotellthetruth.org/portraits/claudette-colvin-2/
I met Claudette Colvin at a White Plains Synagogue some years ago and bought a book that told her story. I lent the book to someone . . . I hope it's still being shared.
