One of my neighbors
asked yesterday why
anyone would want
to read a poem.
He’s someone I like
who has lived in this building
as long as we have (most
of my life) and he is
what used to be called
a bon vivant. That is,
he is handsome, in his
eighties now, long time
younger lover who was
a model very briefly.
My neighbor
is an excellent dancer,
strong sense of rhythm
even in the elevator.
I told him that poems
are a form of music
and of course
they are not for
everyone, Nothing is.
He said he likes
music that has
nothing to do with poems.
Here’s an interview with SHERYL MCCARTHY on CUNY TV.

I enjoyed the interview, Esther. My favorite poem in the book is the one of the mother and daughter who bought the motel. I would love to meet them! “All of us” is one delight after another. Thank you🙋🏻
We each dance to the music of our own poem, right? I've started viewing the interview - it is SO good to see and hear you in the flesh, as they say. Doesn't everyone start by teaching a writing class in a supermarket? You are the best bean in the aisle.
