Where To Go To College
And now Ms. Ndaba is applying to college. Young African
woman she's a person who could make the world better
and she will. Where she'll study not an easy question.
Born in South Africa not a US citizen here on a student visa
sponsored by her boarding school because she does not
qualify for money from the state of New York she does not
qualify for the usual grants CUNY SUNY not a good option
we loved Hunter College people looked like her teaching
studying we are looking at schools
with complex histories could she study in Kentucky what about
Kentucky itself many pieces to this puzzle and then, hard not to think of so many
students who want a chance to learn need an opportunity someone
to help them figure out what they can do how they can do it someone
to tell them what we all know that there are chances if you know where to look
and in every single school there are people in community colleges and big
universities people to learn from people who will be your friends
almost every night I talk to Bruce we met in a random college he was a transfer
I chose the school by reading an article while I was waiting for my mother
at the beauty parlor about an interesting woman a lawyer who had
so many ideas she had gone to George Washington University so I did too
I met Bruce and read and wrote some poems and life began but
for Ms. Ndaba for so many other people trying for
better than before looking for people and paths and books
how to live a meaningful life what that looks like what that means
where to go to college one small piece of the Big Life Puzzle
and we are looking with Ms. Ndaba to find that puzzle piece now.
