The great Al Hibbler sang with Ellington
Unchained Melody but the Righteous Brothers
sang the version most of us loved and yesterday when a woman
in a writing class told us how she fell in love, during the pandemic,
on an international Karaoke site called Starmaker
with a man in Istanbul she said Unchained Melody
clinched the deal and the whole class clapped.
Later that night I told the story to another writing class
and Nora North sister of my old friend Dan explained
her uncle Alex North born Isadore Soifer fourteen Oscar
nominations composed Unchained Melody
for a prison film called Unchained. He asked his friend
to write some lyrics. We never know what will become a song.
In 1955, 4 versions of the song (including Al Hibbler’s) were on Britain’s Top 20 simultaneously!
Lovely, like a song 💕
