We were lucky enough to buy a house
second place to live alongside our small rent stabilized
orange apartment lucky 35 summers here
and now I wonder if we were naive
or right when we bought this house not to think
about the politics of our neighbors (Alan LaTarte who
lived next door with his family we liked them a lot gave
me an Ollie North for President t-shirt. I wish I still
had it. Probably worth a fortune. I wore it once when we
went swimming with his family to the creek and a
stranger there gave me the big thumbs up).
I grew up in a factory town we were mostly different
from each other I thought then still think now (although
now I’m not as sure of anything as I was then)
that difference could be good especially
if we could talk to one another and listen,
share meals and days. We could start
by agreeing that this July 31, even though
it’s a little cold, is an entirely beautiful day.
