I wish I remembered more.
I try to remember
what childhood was like
what happened when I went
to college and Joseph LaMothe
first college boyfriend
his name one of his strongest suits
from Geneva and he said
he wanted to be a poet I don’t know
if he ever wrote a poem
volunteering in Israel
living in the city of Nazareth
a place that shaped so much of my life
meeting Arabs who hadn’t been
a big part of the story I knew
realizing how often we don’t know
all the ways the same story is told
Israeli Arabs and Palestinians
and Muslims and Christians and then
Israelis from everywhere Yemen and Kurdistan
and trying to understand that story
for so many years and New York City
a love that has never changed
(someone last night a man named
Victor said he would never live
in New York City now and I
who tell a different story hope
I will be there forever.)
another fine poem where I get to learn more about Esther!
I love this one, Esther. It is amazing to me that there are so many ways to see almost anything. I think one of the problems we have today is that we're all convinced that what we are seeing is true and is the only way to see things. Ive always lived in New York City or a burb of NYC and feel that the city is in my blood. Your friend may not like the city, but luckily, there are other places were he can live. I love my city.
