Helen Geriak kind kindergarten teacher
Peck School across the street
she said You Are a Good Reader so I thought I was.
Much of life fades but never that:
grammar school friends and teachers
set the tone for school. Noah’s
first teacher told us
he was the only one in class knew
the word eggbeater.
I’m sure he’ll remember forever.
Now Ahava some days
when I pick her up she wants to talk
tell me everything that
happened: cheese sandwiches, her
fight with Hazel how they became
friends again. You’ll remember
this forever I say. I already know
that grandma Ahava says.
(PS: An addendum to yesterday’s poem about my childhood neighbor
who claimed she had the first pair of falsies in the state of Connecticut:
a dentist friend yesterday asked me if I meant false teeth. No was the answer.)
Dotty Molton and I were jumping on her mother's bed. She opened a bureau drawer to expose a mountain of falsies, a sight I will never forget.
