Broken mower we need the lawn mowed
I posted on the community bulletin board
fourteen people said they mowed
thirteen men one woman I called the woman first
called all fourteen in the end
two men called me back. Louis came today
to give us an estimate he brought his friend Dennis
they’re both retired steam fitters no one here
wants me to ask anyone about their politics
but I am curious have no intention
of converting anyone of getting into
difficult conversations I want to know why
we all think the way we do
reason plays a role but then
there is the rest of the story
I told Dennis I’d organized a sculpture show
with the steamfitters local in the nineties.
It’s a different union now he said.
Used to be all Irish men fathers and sons
today we have women in the union and people of color.
It’s better said Dennis. Still his candidate
for president could possibly be in jail.
Dennis said to Louis
We probably lost this job
because she’s a lib and does some art thing
And I said don’t make assumptions
about people and Louis said I never do.
So, did they cut the grass? I worry about our future when we all need to be in our own clan to do something as simple as mowing the lawn. I had major surgery last week. I don’t think my surgeon’s voting history was as relative on that day as perhaps her academic and professional record was. I was more interested on whether she’d gotten a good night’s sleep or argued with her son at breakfast that morning. I think that the Universe must have been smiling at me, as I’m doing quite well so far.
I went to my aunt's house several years ago with my mother(her sister-in-law). My aunt announced "we don't discuss religion or politics over dinner." After we left, my mother let it out: "Religion and politics are THE most interesting things! Grrrrr."
Propriety and passion.
