(Maybe this could be part of the travel series in verse. Or not.)
We are in Greenport small vacation part of Long Island
we do not know. Friends live nearby. We will
try not to use words like pandemic not listen to news
(not mayoral debates not the awful Israel story)
taking off a few days from All the Rest
hard to do in our apartment hard to do altogether
and yet I am always grateful for and yets
we are in a hotel with the undistinguished name Harbor View
there is and yesterday we had baklava gelato at lunch
sat by a carousel on a bench by the water
drank hipster wine in a can, ate oysters as perfect
as any oysters North Fork oysters even ate lobster rolls
and then there is today.
My offering to you ... in progress... my life for 8 years... must come back to what is unfinished here:
❤**********❤
I know Greenport so well.
It was where my paternal grandparents' vacationed, at the Soundview ... I remember staying overnight with them one summer night. As the sun rose in the morning, I went out of our door directly onto the beach. Fishing was a passion of my grandfather's, and I joined him strolling into the surf as he threw his line far into the water!
I lived in Riverhead 2010- 2018 for its proximity to Greenport, specifically Peconic Landing, CCRC where my mom moved to at that same time.
** You surely Must check out the Vineyards!!! They have been noted to have bypassed the Sonoma Valley in wine production/ratings?
Irving Mendelson was a Manhattan attorney and grandmother Marjorie worked in education, also did the NYTimes Crosswords everyday...
My uncle Jon was 13 years younger than my father and I knew he'd vacationed with his parents in Greenport. We've always lived far apart but I adored him from first sight, as a toddler. Only 18 years my senior, he'd shown up (with buddies on the road) at our home in Pittsburgh when I was just 2 or 3. I was hoisted atop his shoulders and carried up a wooded area beyond our blacktop
