Today is Still Inconceivably Beautiful
and we are leaving Greenport although we could stay longer
Yesterday we celebrated Warren’s birthday
lunch a whole lamb and food and food and food
he and Donna know how to make a party
their guests introduce themselves to each other
Rich at our table said his mother’s father was a rabbi
who put her into an orphanage when she was three years old
so his mother never liked any kind of religion rabbis especially
even went to a yard sale where I bought my favorite
Vera Williams book Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe
from a woman with a big farm whose children just moved in with her
dinner with our old good friends
Nikola and Dana and Una their daughter she is six
in the house they built all around the light
ancient temple on the water and we ate
razor clams from Orient made on the grill
we could still be talking right now returned home
to our hotel with a deep grey ceiling
happy for friendship and for the beauty of this weekend
and every single imperfect place like the North Fork
of Long Island and for every single imperfect place.
