The Second Day of Passover (Staying Inside)
On the first day we knew
what to do but the second day
after we've done what we know
(sing dayenu find a friend or two or family
talk about exodus ) then we invent rituals (some of us
invent rituals all along) we read about
other people's passovers my friend
Dorien described her first few years in Bergen Belsen
her mother wrote down what happened they made
matzah to share we talk about Exodus what
Exodus means maybe we are exiting from this
awful time recognizing what we were too caught up
to recognize before that we need all of us to change
this world even when we're inside thinking,
maybe even watching Akwafina: Nora from Queens
(wonderful by the way) discussing whether
Obama wants Elizabeth Warren for VP analyzing Bernie's
withdrawal speech reading overdue
library books when we're inside making matzah ball soup
( too late for Chicken Fat. I won't be next year) we see
spring outside the window no matter what else happens
and maybe we, in the way of new rituals, describe this very spring.
