Bridge was the religion of my childhood.
My parents played constantly.
Jack and Fayette Galen, from
New York City, were their partners.
Jack’s parents from Eastern European
owned a small candy store in Brooklyn.
Jack went to medical school, then moved
to Connecticut to be a doctor.
Funny and big, Jack would look me over
when I was sick. You’re ok he’d declare.
And then he’d tell a joke.
And I’d feel fine.
Now I go to Lawrence Kempf, MD
twice a year for blood tests.
His doctoring method is similar to Jack’s.
You’re ok he’ll say and then
he’ll tell me a story about a famous
ex patient, say Aretha Franklin.
And I’ll feel fine.
This sounds like good medicine to me.
