Dear Friends: Thank you to EVERYONE who sent me Steve Stories.
SEND MORE. I was amazed at how many women had Steve Husbands
the first time around. Here’s a great Steve story from the wonderful
Jack Estes.
Please check out my new website: esther cohen.com (made by Kyra Tilson)
It’s still a little imperfect BUT IT’S A WEBSITE. (and we are working on the
perfection part)
This Steve was new on the faculty at the college where I taught. Really bright and funny and good-looking. Especially well-spoken with a slight British accent. And he even built his own houseboat where he lived. Bigger than the van in Nomadland. After five years he quit teaching and moved out of town and lived on his houseboat and took tourists sailing. (He also had a sailboat, but he didn’t build it.)
I looked him up a year or so later, but I had a hard time finding him. Because he’d changed his name to Charles. Not Charlie or Chuck. Only Charles. He wouldn’t say why.
Funny thing is, though, that Charles fit him better than Steve. He must’ve known that, deep down. Don’t know why, but it did. I think it was more regal. I don’t remember anyone being King Steve. But King Charles?
Jack
