Race and Coincidence and Birthday Parties
We went to a birthday party last night for a very beautiful
(ways big and small) 17 year old boy named Shole
whose single mother our good friend Dani
equally beautiful big and small brought him
from a small orphanage in a village in Ethiopia
when he was very young. They live in Coxsackie
New York one of those complicated (I love them)
towns in upstate New York. Coxsackie’s right on
the Hudson River. Shole’s best friend, also an adopted
appealing boy named Getty, also living, by chance,
in Coxsackie with his parents, was born in the very
same orphanage as Shloe. Khanyisile Ndaba, with us
for the weekend, heard the story from Getty’s father.
“Cosmic and weird,” she said.
