For obvious reasons, I love Purim.
At the Beth Israel synagogue I always played Esther,
and I got to choose my Esther outfit.
Years later when I moved to New York City
I went to Zabars to pick up hamantaschen
mixed with more prune women
outside carried Anti-Esther signs.
Up with Vashti. Down with Esther.
I asked one of the women Melanie
what Esther did that was so wrong. Melanie
explained and she was right about Vashti
and Esther. Now it’s Purim again and still I will
wear an Esther dress, then
go to Zabars to buy hamantaschen
mostly prune.
Esther, I love your new Overheard series! I read them everyday even though I don't always comment.
Hail Vashti AND Esther! And Happy Purim!
