Peter liked this paragraph from
last night’s notes at the Bard Community Concert
(where we got to hear Lory play oboe):
The Poet and Peasant Overture contains
the most loving Viennese kitsch ever to be composed:
a regal brass chorale, a lyrical cello solo, a contrasting
andante leading to the schmaltziest of waltzes,
all being wrapped up in a fiery coda that seems to throw
all subtlety out the window. . . . . As a result,
we are forced to investigate the overture for clues
as to the various hijinks/misadventures/love-heptagons
that our elusive poet and shadowy peasant
have gone through.
I love that piece, schmaltz and all. it was transposed to the piano, and I used to play it. I loved the title too, though I had no idea re the poet and the peasant.
Hijinks Welcome!
