IDO from Burma
learned about mushrooms
in Burma he now finds himself in Brooklyn
bad Burmese politics
grows mushrooms in Brooklyn
sells them at our farmers market.
Every week I buy
his mushrooms for Sunday dinner.
Ido told me that I am his first
Real American who talks to him
more than How Much Are the Mushrooms.
I’m more interested in IDO himself
(I like his mushrooms but they’re
only mushrooms.) who has a lot to say
about Burma and Brooklyn
and the farmer’s market and what he thinks
about Americans and life.
Today he asked me if I ever
knew anyone from Burma
and I told him about a man that Peter
and I met on our honeymoon in Bangkok
who ended up living with us for a week
many years ago. The Burmese consulate
gave him this advice about New York:
if you’re lost, wait for someone to help
who speaks Burmese. I told him
that was not a good idea.
Ido asked if there was actually
anyone he shouldn’t talk to.
Talk to everyone I said.
Maybe said Ido.
What country are you from
he asked. This one I replied.
At least you’re not from Burma
Ido said.
A fascinating take on "otherness." His celebration of your not being Burmese is interesting. You have a special spirit. Thank you for sharing
Talk to everyone...good advice!
