Why do you write all those poems
asked a neighbor yesterday.
I don’t know him he is newish he doesn’t
read poems but another neighbor told
him I write every day.
I asked what he does each day.
Walk the dog he said.
Why do you walk the dog I asked.
I have no choice he answered.
Aha I said.
You mean you are like the dog he said.
Thanks, Esther. I used this poem with my 9- and 10-year-olds in a short story class. The prompt was to use a snippet of overheard conversation to create a story. I always end with a poem or two on topic. This was perfect and they loved it.
