My friend Virginia
I couldn’t ever do her justice
how do religious professionals
sum up lives
in fifteen minutes?
Virginia didn’t live in a straight line.
She had many husbands.
She had many children.
One husband she met
crossing the street at lunchtime.
Turned out he was the head
of a big publishing house.
They had a party
a famous author described.
She had handsome lovers.
Her last husband, a painter,
became a quadripalegic.
She took good care of him.
She worked. She always worked.
Writer, a peace activist,
constant enthusiast,
over forty years ago she moved me
into this apartment
in her Volkswagen bug and then
she put up
my beaded curtains.
My friend Virginia
was not an easy friend.
But I will miss her.
She’ll be with you in spirit forever. A deep friendship is one of life’s treasures.
As a regular reader of obituaries, this one is a standout. Such a warm and meaningful tribute.
