I’ve written more often
about Shoprite supermarket
thank I have about money for reasons
I can’t say I have been
privileged and lucky in my life
always able to get a job
pay my rent buy pistachio nuts
plenty of earrings
I was a Kelly Girl for years
before they became Kelly Persons
used my money for many notebooks
and the endless search for The Right Pen
I’ve been lucky with money even now
still work on Other People’s Books
teach and get paid for some classes
have enough money for one pound or two
of Turkish pistachio nuts and pretty much
anything else and as a result I am
ambivalent about the substack formula
of charging readers to read my poems
fifty dollars a year or five dollars a month
a friend argued that poems
should be worth as much as pistachio nuts
I did not have a good answer.
I do agree, poems are worth, at least, as much as pistachio nuts. That said, casting your bread upon the water, as you do, may bring its own reward. And I, for my haiku, have been paid enough to buy a few pistachio nuts (but just a few.)
Sometimes we get paid by charging, and sometimes we get paid by life. Some of us always seem to have enough, either way. Glad you've been lucky!
