On Monday night and Tuesday too most restaurants
are closed. Some are closed on Wednesdays too.
Because it was a beautiful night we decided to go to eat
on the Catskill creek at a funky Marina called Hop O Nose
where food is not the point but you face the creek
eat something recognizable calamari or crab cakes
drink a glass of wine that is wine enough see the sun
and the night and the creek. Hard to get help
and all things are understaffed
half hour minimum wait by the creek so we went instead
to an old fashioned Italian restaurant much like childhood
Italian food and on Monday three courses are $16
packed with happy customers
talking loudly about weather and their favorite TV shows
drinking to friendship to broken shoulders replaced knees
someone described her clavicle break
and toward the end of our meal a man who looked familiar
enough came over and said to Peter
By Any Chance are you Cliff Wexler? We haven’t
seen you in forty years and we’ve been discussing
all night whether you’re him and Peter who did not
want to disappoint the stranger said No
I asked who Cliff Wexler was. A college teacher
the man said. We all liked him. Sorry that forty years
have gone by. Why don’t you give him a call I asked.
I might the stranger said.
P.S.
As you know I don’t know much about mysteries. But I’m writing one.
