(sorry for a thousand reasons.
Though making a list of some of them
is daunting I’ll try)
I’m sorry for acting superior
about so many things including
politics, opinions, even typeface,
for making judgements when they
don’t matter at all e.g.
I can’t believe you actually liked
the last Ta-Nehesi Coates
book the movie you recommended
(talk about didactic) I’m sorry that I
sometimes take the position
of Moral High Ground
(how can you think that)
that I am often not
the friend I’d like to be
a good friend just listens
and doesn’t use dismissive platitudes
(sorry you feel that way)
a good friend calls to say hello
and doesn’t judge other people
who don’t have much time to do the same
I’m sorry that I don’t read
the way I use to
indiscriminately
sorry I get so drawn in to
social media looking at crazy
pictures on Instagram instead
of reading a good poem
or trying to write one
sorry I didn’t play the piano for months
didn’t spend the summer the way I’d planned
writing handwritten letters
to people I love telling them I love them
I’m sorry I don’t forgive so easily
that I hold on to this and that
sorry I haven’t yet not until now anyway
written a book about sorry, and love.
You’ve just created a path for a thousand more people to love you, which would include me.
