WE ARE THINKING OF DOING YIDDISH WORD PUZZLES
STARTING WITH ONE OF MY FAVORITES WORDS: FARBISSINA,
MY GRANDMOTHER ANNA, SPEAKER OF COLORFUL
YIDDISH DEFINITIONS, DEFINED AS A PERSON WHOSE FACE
WAS EXACTLY THE SAME AS A VERY DRIED OUT PRUNE.
(SEND US YOURS. AND FYI I’VE STILL COLLECTING STEVE STORIES.
A WOMAN IN CLASS LAST NIGHT ASKED IF STEPHEN STORIES
ARE ALSO ACCEPTABLE. ANY AND ALL VARIATIONS OF STEVE
STILL WANTED.)
one of my favorite words is a yiddish word my parents used when describing a person who is worse than a run of the mill yenta. they would say," a yenta is a person who just wants to lift the lid of a pot cooking on the stove because they are so nosy, they would "BURST" if they could not see what was cooking inside that pot". my mother would say that" WORSE" than the common yenta was a person who lifted the lid only to mix in "TROUBLE,MISERY,BAD LUCK & IILLNESS. that person is called a KOOJ-NER-CA. only problem is that most yiddish speakers Tell me there is no such word. I was told by two speakers both in their 90's that their parents used the word KOOJ-NER-CA as did my father. their parents were also from Minsk. they think it must be a yiddish/russian hybrid. anyone else know of such?-thanks, Doug e.
