I Know We'll Be in Touch (a Meditation)
(Edite said that this morning. She's right.)
I am often not
the friend I would like to be.
Distracted I half-listen. Actually mull over
what I can't do and never will
or worse: forgot the milk
forgot the bread forgot to send an
invoice pay a bill forgot a birthday
forgot to call the endocrinologist
dentist forgot my Vitamin D
didn't make time to call Laura in Michigan
to mail a book give away
the stack of books (John le Carre et al)
in the front hall there forever.
But this morning, when I call a friend
a good friend, we can't live without good friends
I will listen and listen and talk too
and for all of you who I have only half listened to
I have every intention I really do
of being right there with you.
