The last few days we were in Connecticut
along the water near Westbrook. On our way home
we passed Hammonasset Beach State Park.
My childhood family never went on a picnic
certainly never hiked or walked in the woods
but once so many years ago I talked my parents
and their best friends Jack and Fayette Galen
and their four children into a Sunday visit
to Hammonasset Beach State Park.
I don’t know why I thought it was a good idea
and even imagined we would swim.
Although it was only about half an hour away
we packed as though we were going on a voyage.
What was in those bags? I don’t know. We all set out.
Jack Galen drove an Edsel. My father had a Dodge.
When we arrived at Hammonassett Beach
State Park no one wanted to get out of the car
walk around or sit on the ground and so Jack
suggested we drive around and look for a place
to get a bite to eat. Hot dogs and fries.
Maybe even a lobster roll. And that’s what we did.

Lobster rolls! Not quite kosher, but...
