In Sarasota we talked about age because
everyone we met was getting even older
there are times in life say your thirties
and forties small not big ways
of aging and then although I can’t pinpoint
a time or a date maybe in Guatemala on my 50th birthday
I remember saying to Noah he was young
I turned 50 and he said what does that mean
50 is a big number is what I said then
before numbers got even bigger
but now I see that age although it is entirely real
as real as anything still depends on history and luck
and having the chance to be yourself no matter
about various body parts Gloria Steinem is 88 today
and she is still entirely Gloria Steinem.
At the Clara Lemlich Awards in May we will honor
our oldest recipient Dorothy Burnham 107
this week and I who am older now than I’ve ever been
am grateful to be older and having the chance
to put a flower at the Triangle Fire building today
watch the ceremony, eat dinner with friends,
and celebrate what being alive can mean.
