Ahava’s favorite rolls are Zomick’s egg challah
and yesterday at Zabars they were, for unknown reasons
(I asked the cashier and she didn’t know) half price
so I bought them for Len the homeless man on the corner
who told me before he liked Zabar’s chocolate ruggelach.
He didn’t like the Zomick’s rolls. Too eggy said Len.
good for Len. he is discriminating.. although most supermarket bakery items prepared on premises are awful, sometimes you can find one or two items that are quite good. blueberry scones from my local supermarket are really good. they go fast. I order them. sometimes 6 boxes of four at a time.one baker took me on the side to ask me why I order so many. we are all curious. I told him " they are the only thing my boa constrictor eats". he bought it. they sell an item labeled "jewish apple cake". I asked how they assign a religious classification to food. I wanted to know if some of the Italian pastries are not labeled "catholic cannolis "? once when traveling in Tennessee, we stopped at a factory store that advertised "cast iron cookware". there was a large display of "kosher"salt" bags. I asked a salesperson named kitty ,"what is kosher salt? she told me "it's salt that is prayed over". she said rabbis say a prayer to make it a holy salt. I asked if she thought they sent a rabbi into a warehouse to pray over thousands of boxes and paper sacks of salt? with great conviction, kitty told me, "absolutely not. they pray over them one a a time. that's what makes them so expensive. while we were walking away kitty said, "you know jews do crazy things. that's what they are known for".
Zomick's exports to Pennsylvania, so I skipped the interstate quarantine.
