Dear Everyone,
Many of you know that Bread and Roses is one of those songs that is inside me forever. An American suffrage activist, Helen Todd, used the line in a famous speech, which inspired the title of a poem by James Oppenheim, published in 1911. In 1912, Bread and Roses was the theme of the textile workers strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts. I listen to this song very often. There are hundreds of versions. I love many of them. Here’s Joan Baez and Mimi Farina. Today’s a gorgeous day to celebrate workers everywhere.
Love to everyone.
On this painful day (around Israel/Palestine) it is healing to hear one of the important anthems of the American labor movement where we Jews were leaders for a just cause. Thank you Esther.
Right on, Esther Cohen.
