(Funny how many people wrote asking for Another Song Story.
I don’t know much about music although like every other living human
being except for one I met years ago whose name was Roy Donahue,
I love music. This is not a President’s Day Song Story, fyi.)
In the late seventies I was not thinking about Career
most of us weren’t then and because I wanted to be a writer
writer writer I’ll have to find a way of finding Other Ways
to Earn a Living I got a job, by chance, through a woman I knew
just a little named Karen whose husband worked at the Apollo,
I worked for Bob Marley’s agent Don Taylor. Our offices
were in the West 50’s and any time he needed some sentences
which was more or less Every Day, I’d write them. And when
Marley et al came to town I wrote some press releases, which I’m
sure in retrospect were entirely crazy. I used many adjectives
and adverbs, and did not follow the Who What When Where Rule.
Once Don gave me a difficult task: explain to Marley, he said,
who would only accept payment for his performances with cash,
explain to him that a check is the same as money. I tried my
best. You see this piece of paper, I said. It isn’t just a piece of paper.
It represents 25,000 dollars. You are even crazier than you look
Bob Marley said to me. We both laughed.
Put a smile on my face!
Great story! Then there's the one about...
