Because soon, the Jewish New Year
5783
because New Year is always an excuse
to say what you hope to do
because it is mid-September
and another nice day
and because we are driving upstate
for a few days and will stop
at Adams supermarket on the way up
I love Adams
and because there’s a new restaurant
Au Za’atar on 58th and First
funny neighborhood near the bridge
and because I bought a new notebook
yesterday for no good reason
and my millionth pair of earrings
and because we watched the last
episode of this season’s MO (what a show!)
and because I read a long story
in the New Yorker about Choose Your
Own Adventure (I worked on a few of
those books met the author Edward Packard
because of his unusual handwriting
on a bulletin board at Fairway when Fairway
had bulletin boards. Edward Packard is 90
now and very rich he paid me $300 for a Choose
adventure) and because life is so mysterious
and always full and because the older I get
the more I (unlike almost everyone else)
like poems.
There's always a good reason to buy a new notebook. It just may not reveal itself immediately upon purchase.
Also: I grew up near 58th and First.
The older I get, the more I like work.
