Another Tooth Poem
a subject I've written about a lot
1)
Although there aren’t many
poems about teeth, I have written
my share. (Years ago
an old agent said No Teeth Ever.
I saved her anti-tooth letter in my
Forever File.)
2)
On the subway a woman named Dawn
asked, “Do you have a good dentist?”
“I do,” I said.
“I’m going to see him now.”
She got off the train to write down
his name. Dr. Michael Donovan.
3)
One day we will have a Tooth Exhibit
in his office waiting room. I’ve always
wanted to put Teeth Poems and Teeth
together on a wall.
4)
He fixed my mouth today.
I was there for a while.
When I was leaving he prescribed
a Negroni for tonight.
I will make one now.

As you know, Book Doctor, I will always have a tender spot for all things dentition-related.
It is function, it is self-image, it is health-instrumental, it is symbolic, and it is --mortality.
At this stage in my dental voyage, I don't so much need a D.D.S. as I do a handyman with tools.
My dentist deserves a MacArthur Award..
