When we
first moved in when we
were the young couple here
we would watch Herbert Vail
carry a box of pastries
tied with string for his girlfriend
Gertrude and he would knock
on her door and she’d appear
bedecked, her bright red hair
swept to one side, earrings dangling,
and he’d give her the pastry box
and she’d smile and pull him in.
Now, Peter brings pastries
to me.
